Learning Objectives

The 'Operate Forklift' Course is aimed at providing individuals with the knowledge and skills to operate forklift safely. At the end of the course, participants will be proficient in selection of appropriate forklift, conducting risk assessment and route checks, identification of hazards for forklift operations, basic forklift operations and reinstating it in a safe manner.

The Competency Elements covered are:

  •  Prepare to carry out forklift operations
  •  Inspect forklift
  • Carry out forklift operations
  • Reinstate and hand over forklift

This course aims to provide people already working or wishing to enter the generic manufacturing industry with the skills and knowledge required to operate forklift.

• Safety precautions in inspecting forklift
• Cargo handling symbols
• Forklift stability
• Operating procedures for different types of loads
• Safety precautions in lifting potentially hazardous loads
• Operating procedures for different types of terrains and confined spaces
• Workplace safety and health code of practice relating to forklift operations
• Procedures of reporting unsafe/unauthorised forklift practices
• Procedures relating to parking of forklift

Assumed Attitude, Skills and Knowledge

The assumed skills and knowledge for this unit are as follows. Learners are assumed to:

• be able to interpret work instructions and technical information;
• be able to listen and speak English at a proficiency level equivalent to the Employability Skills System (ESS) level 3;
• be able to read and write English at a proficiency level equivalent to ESS level 3; and
• be able to process numbers at a proficiency level equivalent to ESS level 3
